Northland Honeybee Veterinary Service is a practice started by Dr. Eva Reinicke that concentrates on providing high quality veterinary medicine to apiaries throughout mid-central Minnesota and Wisconsin. Honey bee’s play a critical role in food production, pollinating vast quantities of blooming fruits like apples, citrus, grapes, peaches and cherries. They also pollinate flowering vegetables such as broccoli, green beans, cucumber, squash and tomatoes and tree nuts like almonds, walnuts and macadamia nuts to name a few. As a bonus they produce honey, bee’s wax, pollen and other natural items humans consume. Without honey bees our dietary options would be greatly limited.
Like all food producing animals, honey bees face disease and production pressure which can often be accentuated due to their sensitivity to environmental conditions. Therefore it is important that beekeepers and veterinarians work together in a multi factorial approach to positively impact hive health.
It is important to be able to determine when colonies are healthy versus diseased and beekeepers and veterinarians can collaborate to diagnose specific conditions and make treatment plans. Veterinarians are highly trained in areas of disease control and prevention, antibiotic use and regulation and proper food safety regulations.
